Blog Entry 22: Freestyle

I never realized how many different versions of the play there are. They've made a couple different movies that don't necessarily follow the play exactly, but they still use the same type of language follow the play pretty well, and then there is the movie O, where it's so much more modernized. It helps you understand the play better because your not having to decifer what they are meaning, because the play is in a language we don't ever hear anymore.
I viewed the scene from the Fishbourne Version of Othello. I recognized some of the actors in the movie, but I've never heard this version of the movie before.

I also viewed a version with Ian McKellen in it. The film looks to be older. It's the scene where a woman talks about the hankerchief.

I even viewed a 1930's version of Othello. The play was in black and white.

Blog Entry 20: Quote Response

No hinge nor loop
To hang a doubt on.
Othello. ACT III Scene 3.
I chose this quote because I thought it was interesting how they talked a hinge and loop. I thought of loop to be a noose. The movie has to do with racism, so I thought it was kind of an interesting find, connecting those two things.

Freestyle Week 7

I really liked the things we did this week. Going over the play Othello and the movie O. My freshman year of high school we did a whole section for 2 quarters on Greek Mythology. I absolutely loved it. Being in college you don't really get to see your own take on the way you read poems, and this class actually made me like I was in high school again. I haven't read this play or scene the movie for a few years.

Blog Entry 16: Scene Selection

I chose the scene in O where Josh Hartnet tells Othello that his girlfriend is cheating on him with her best friend. I chose this scene because it kind of sets up the whole movie. This is when Othello starts to kind of go crazy because he doesn't want to lose her. Josh Hartnet will do anything he can to get rid of Othello, mainly because he's jealous and wants his life. He wants his girlfriend and the attention Othello receives.

Blog Entry 17: Quote Response

Hale - "I want to see John."
Hale - "Can't I see John?"
Mrs. Wright - "No."
Hale - "Ain't he home?"
Mrs. Wright - "Yes, he's home."
Hale - "Than why can't I see him?"
Mrs. Wright - "Cause he's dead."

I chose this quote because it wasn't so much the words that jumped out at me but the response of Mrs. Wright. She wasn't hysterical, crying and being obnoxious, she just sat there. This section is important in the story because majority of the poem is about John Wright and the County Attorney questioning people about the Wright family. I just couldn't imagine walking up the stairs of my home and finding a family member hanging. The thought of it kills me.

Blog Entry 15: Freestyle

I actually enjoyed this weeks assignments. I went and got my books for this class 2 weeks or so before they started. I had Persepolis within the first couple days. I've never read a book like this before. Illustrated and written like a comic strip. I feel like it really helped me understand the things that went on during the 1980's in Iran. I've read textbooks about the history of Iran, but never comprehended it as well I have reading this book.
Reading through the Week 6 materials about her biography, I saw that she is coming out with a sequel. I honestly am kind of excited to read it. I'm kind of a history buff, so when I find something that is fun and an easy read, I really enjoy it a lot more. These assignments have given me a better understanding a better respect for what the people in Iran have been through.

Entry 14: Quote Response

"We didn't really like to wear the veil, especially since we didn't understand why we had to" (Satrapi pg. 3).
I thought her pictures under this dialogue was interesting. She showed all the different ways women thought about using the veil.

"The doors had been locked from the outside a few minutes before the fire" (Satrapi pg. 14).
I thought this whole page was interesting. It showed how much disrespect the Shah had for the people. Locking people inside a building and killing them all, then beating the people who were wanting to rescue them.

"Mom, I spoke to Ramin, he says his father did the right thing in killing communists"(Satrapi pg. 46).

I can't believe even children knew what was going on. They were believing it was okay for their family members to kill others.

I actually really liked this book. The pictures and the small captions made it a lot easier to understand what really went on during this time. I chose these certain captions because all the words stood out to me. The illustrations allow people to follow along easier when reading something about a horrible tragedy. It makes it easier to comprehend. These frames are important to the novel mainly because it helps us see what people were going through on paper and not just imagining it in our heads.

Entry 13: Quote Response

"And by his use of symbolism, Elliot affords us the pleasure of finding our own entrance to his poem."

I thought this quote was interesting. I always like having to figure things out. Having to think a little hard. When authors use symbolism, its fun to make the connections with what they are trying to say and what they are relating it to.

Entry 11: Quote Response

"Why they should feel verse to be like rain I do not know. It must have been, however, an expression of applause, since in Africa rain is always longed for and welcomed."

I thought this quote was interesting. It always amazes me how people can relate one thing to another. For example, saying rain as an applause. I always wonder what makes people think of certain things and why.

Song Quote-Response

"There was this woman and there was this man
There was this moment they had a chance to hold on to what they had
How could they be so in love and still never see
Now nothin' could be sadder than (Walker)"

The words that leap out as important in this song are; woman, man, moment, chance, love, sadder. The thing that interests me about this song is I think a lot of us find ourselves in this place. We try so hard to make something work, but in the end it just doesn't. After being in love for so long, and just letting it crumble is really sad. A lot of poems that I've read have been about love, and I thought these lyrics were appropriate.

Haiku

In Winter,
I'd wake and hear the cold splintering, breaking.
In the mountains,
You and I can turn and look
to see
The dropping of the daylight in the West.

Blog Entry 8: Paraphrase Poem

I chose to paraphrase the poem about the months.

Thirty days hath September,
April, June, and November;
All the rest gave thirty-one
Excepting February alone,
To which we twenty-eight assign
Till leap year makes it twenty-nine.

I chose to paraphrase it because I use this poem all the time, it kind of made me laugh when I saw it in the list of poems. This poem gives us an easy was to tell how many days are in each month. When we need to know if a month has thirty days or thirty-one, this is probably the easiest way than digging out a calender.

Freestyle #6

I was recently reading an article about people who dislike the wind towers. They were explaining how people have begun to complain about them ruining our scenery. Personally, I lived on a multi-million dollar, 300,000 acre ranch in Washington. We've been trying for years to get the wind towers up on our property. They create so much energy and save a lot of money. I just thought it was interesting, being in an economy that is in the rut right now, these towers are helping us, but yet people still find a reason to complain.

A Clean, Well Lighted Place

In the story, "A Clean, Well Lighted Place", I thought it was interesting when the waiters were talking about the old man. They were talking about him trying to commit suicide, the one waiter asked "why it was nothing" (the reason he tried to commit suicide was nothing, he had no reason) and the other waiter said "Because he has a lot of money". It's interesting how money seems to create happiness. Because you have a lot of money you have no reason to do anything. The waiter's seemed a little selfish. They're supposed to be at work, helping people with what they want. Maybe they should make the man pay before hand, and then give him his change before he leaves if he over paid. They should want the man to kill himself just because he doesn't leave until late at night.

Freestyle #2

I was reading the sample paper, and I really wasn't too fond of it. I've read some boring papers but this one was really hard for me to stay focused on. I kept thinking about other things, there was really nothing that caught my eye. I'd jump paragraphs and then realize I'm already done with the page. There was nothing in it that really caught my eye.

Miss Brill

"They did not speak. This was disappointing, Miss Brill always looked forward to the conversation". The words speak, disappointing, and conversation leaped out to me as important. This passage is important to the story because she's by her self on a Sunday (Sundays usually seem to be family days) so she's probably lonely. When she goes out and listens to the band, she wants to talk to people, but they didn't seem to want to talk to her. This interested me because if there were only three people sitting watching the band, you'd think they'd be kind and talk to her.

Freestyle

A reading issue I was aware of was at my high school. We had a book that a teacher of mine wanted to read (I don't remember what it was called or about) and when he handed it out to students parents began calling the administration office wanted him to take back the book. They believed it was offensive and not appropriate for a high school Advanced Placement European History Class. This interested me because after we gave the book back, I googled it and read a little bit about it and didn't really understand what was so bad about it. My interest came from this because I was apart of it my Junior year of high school. I don't really have any questions, I just think, he's a teacher, he obviously knows certain things, I think if he wanted us to read the book we should have read the book. I see this issue occurring in many places like schools. I recommend that if a teacher is wanted us to read a book, let us read it.

A Rose For Emily

"She told them that her father was not dead. She did that for three days, with the ministries calling on her, and the doctors trying to persuade her to let them dispose of the body". The words that leap out to me are dead, three, days, dispose, and body. This passage is important to the story because it really shows how much Emily's father meant to her. He meant so much that she was in denial that he ever died for three days and she wouldn't get rid of the body. This interested me because, it shows how much he meant to her. The poor woman is alone, and I think her keeping his dead body was only because after it was gone, she was alone.

Introduction

Hi! My name is Erica Anderson, my major is Pre-Nursing. I'm officially a sophomore here at EOU. For years my mom would always read to me before bed, my grandma would show me flashcards with words on them every time I went to her house. Shortly after I started fully talking I was able to read certain words and sentences. I've always disliked reading in front of a class. I'm pretty shy, so I would stutter through the whole page I'd have to read. For the last couple years I've been reading the Stephanie Plum Series by Janet Evonovich. They're hilarious and a pretty easy read. I interviewed my boss, she said she doesn't have a lot of time to read since she has a small business and a full time job on the side. She likes mysteries though because they are thrilling. A coworker really likes the Alex Cross series of books and John Gresham, she likes mysteries too, she said because she likes to have to think and figure things out while she's reading. My boyfriend likes to read sports illustrated, sports books, and the newspaper. He plays football at Eastern so I'm guessing that's why their his favorite. Their experiences relate to mine because I like mysteries too. I really like to read a few pages and then try to figure out what's going to happen next or who did what and why.
